July Spotlight: Daniel Server
Title: Senior Principal Consultant
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Been with Collaborative for: 3 Years
Why did you choose Collaborative?
I had been in the world of consulting for quite a while, including a couple of years of prior Workday implementation experience. I was in informal discussions with several partner firms, but Collaborative really differentiated itself. It seemed like this really was a company where people cared for one another and wanted to win as a family. In addition, it seemed like work-life family balance wasn’t just relegated to the realm of the theoretical but was truly something that Collaborative valued. Combined with the great pay and benefits, the choice was rather easy in the end. I’m glad I picked Collaborative and very glad that they picked me also!
What does your day-to-day look like in your role?
Each day is a little different, and that’s part of what I love. Sometimes I’m writing a Workday report that requires out-of-the-box thinking. Other times I’m managing client tenant builds, working through data conversion challenges, helping to clarify data needs, or working to improve internal tools and processes. And still other times, I’m supporting sales pitches and requests for proposal (RFPs). Collaborative really encourages me to be my own CEO and engage in a robust cross-section of activities, which I find very engaging!
What do you love about your job?
There’s a lot to love about Collaborative, but it starts with the familial feel. People here really care about each other – I’m much more than just an employee ID number. I’m given lots of chances to learn new things and grow in my role. I’ve added one additional Workday certification since joining and am hoping to get another one in the next 6-9 months. I’m also encouraged to challenge the status quo – if there’s a better way to do something, then I’m encouraged to try to figure that out!
What does it take to be successful in your role?
I think the biggest thing is a can-do attitude and an understanding that the best way to get good at Workday (or whatever it is that you’re currently learning) is that you’re probably going to have some bumps along the way. And then you’ll get better at that particular skill, and then you’ll get a chance to learn something else (which probably means being unsure at the beginning). Being able to see failures as learning opportunities is a huge part of it.
How does Collaborative help you grow as a person and in your career?
Collaborative encourages me to branch out and try new things. I’m currently the Culture Club lead for the Atlanta office and I’m responsible for planning events that encourage connection and increase engagement. I’m also helping pioneer several other internal initiatives. Being willing to take the lead on something consistently challenges me to do my best.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
My dad had a huge chest of 1950s and 1960s comics that I enjoyed reading as a child and this was a favorite question of mine when I was little. I’m going to go with the Star Wars character C3PO “superpower” of being able to speak all the known languages in existence. I think a lot of good could be done if you could effectively communicate with anyone and everyone (and I do love to connect with anyone and everyone). Honorable mention to being able to fly.
What’s your favorite TV show at the moment?
I have three kids and two of them are under the age of three. There’s not a lot of time for TV these days, but my wife and I do enjoy watching All Creatures Great and Small when we have a minute. Before that, Madam Secretary was our Monday night date night activity for about six years. It was FANTASTIC!
