December Spotlight: Plamena Solakova
Title: Manager, Consulting Services
Location: London, United Kingdom
Been with Collaborative for: 2.5 years
Why did you choose Collaborative?
I wanted to be part of setting up a new practice. When I first joined Collaborative, we had just established our EMEA business and were actively recruiting consultants to build out a team in London. I was fortunate to be one of the first Financials consultants to join and was able to make an impact from day one.
What does your day-to-day look like in your role?
I work with my customers on a daily basis deploying cloud-based financial systems. I communicate with customers daily, lead architecture conversations, and complete knowledge transfer activities to help them become self sufficient with their cloud-based system. Outside of direct customer responsibilities, I am also involved in sales support, resourcing decisions, practice development initiatives, and people management of my team of Financials consultants. Finally, I lead our EMEA Diversity & Inclusion initiatives. This includes working with a team of four D&I volunteers to organise monthly events and campaigns on topics ranging from gender equality and LGBTQA allyship, to mental health and wellbeing.
What do you love about your job?
The people I work with are the absolute best, and I love our team culture and ways of working. Collaborative’s value of People truly resonates because there is a lot of investment in people-centered initiatives, as well as personal and professional growth in this company. The D&I work we do is a particularly great example of how we continuously prioritise our People and work hard to build an inclusive and collaborative workplace for all.
What does it take to be successful in your role?
As a leader in our Financials practice, I have to display strong leadership skills and be a team player because every project and initiative we work on is done as a team. With customers and prospects, a key skill to have is to be able to present clearly and in relatable language in order to demonstrate value and be able to spark enthusiasm and positive change. Finally, to be a successful lead for Diversity & Inclusion, you have to be empathetic, open-minded, and a passionate change-maker.
How does Collaborative help you grow as a person and in your career?
I took the initiative back in 2018 to set up a Diversity & Inclusion program in EMEA, which has grown into a global initiative with hundreds of people involved and thousands reached through events and communications. Collaborative has supported me in the D&I space since day one. We have buy-in from the very top, starting with the CEO and the President of the company, Vice Presidents, Management teams and employees alike. I have grown in my knowledge of the D&I space and my awareness of social issues, making me a more mindful and empathetic leader and person.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
I would love to be able to reverse climate change and save our planet!
What’s your favorite TV show at the moment?
"The Queen’s Gambit" is my top show of 2020! I am a strong advocate for gender equality and I am a chess player myself, so the show spoke to me on so many levels. I strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it yet!
